Sheridan's
All right, I’ve written before about the phenomenon of the local chain of frozen custard stands. I was never all that invested in Sheridan’s, but it’s been open in my hometown since I was in high school. However it wasn’t much of a hangout spot since it’s outdoors… but I do have one formative memory of Sheridan’s. My calculus teacher was close to retirement and not much of a teacher. He’d literally disappear from class most days and expect us to teach ourselves… (he also got secretly married to the school counselor that year. INTERESTING). But one day he got a bee in his bonnet about “cherry limeADES.” Now I have what a friend once called “the Kansas City accent” where I emphasize the first part of certain phrases… GREEN beans, BEST Buy, and most certainly LIMEade! My classmates got crafty about obtaining these cherry limeADES. One classmate worked at Sheridan’s at the time, so that was easy enough. However they got busted coming back into the building and, being the good rule-following young man that he was, explained “I went to go get these for Mr. ___!” HA! So we drank our drinks but the teacher was NOT HAPPY about being ratted out, even inadvertently.
Either way, cherry limeade is no longer on the menu. Disappointing! Such a formative memory. Not to be confused with the time my physics teacher was so angry with the class that he sent us to lunch early. (Angry with us because we were goofing around in the hallway with a hovercraft he showed us, and bumped into a passing student… and y’all that hovercraft was SLOW!)
This Sheridan’s visit occurred after Worlds of Fun, where I was very excited to hate-try their signature *watermelon-peach* soft serve, but of course the ice cream machine was broken. But y’all this was an excellent consolation prize. I tried a seasonal item, the Red Velvet Oreo Smash, described on the menu as fresh vanilla frozen custard blended with a decadent slice of red velvet cake with real cream cheese frosting, Oreos and topped with chocolate chunks. Y’all, the texture on this was EVERYTHING, and of course it tasted phenomenal. What do you get with your frozen custard?
